'Moon River' crooner dies at age 84

BOB THOMAS, The Associated Press

BRANSON, Missouri (AP) — For the older — OK, squarer — side of the generation gap, Andy Williams was part of the soundtrack of the 1960s and '70s, with easy-listening hits like "Moon River," the "Love Story" theme and "The Most Wonderful Time of the Year" from his beloved Christmas TV specials.

The singer known for his wholesome, middle-America appeal was the antithesis of the counterculture.

"The old cliche says that if you can remember the 1960s, you weren't there," Williams once recalled. "Well, I was there all right, but my memory of them is blurred — not by any drugs I took but by the relentless pace of the schedule I set myself."

The 84-year-old entertainer, who died Tuesday night at his Branson home following a yearlong battle with bladder cancer, outlasted many of the decade's rock stars and fellow crooners such as Frank Sinatra and Perry Como. He remained on the charts into the 1970s and continued to perform into his 80s.

Williams became a major star in 1956, the same year as Elvis Presley, with the Sinatra-like swing number "Canadian Sunset." For a time, he was pushed into such Presley imitations as "Lips of Wine" and the No. 1 smash "Butterfly."

But he mostly stuck to what he called his "natural style" and kept it up throughout his career. In 1970, when even Sinatra had temporarily retired, Williams was in the top 10 with the theme from "Love Story," the Oscar-winning tearjerker. He had 18 gold records, three platinum and five Grammy award nominations.

Williams was also the first host of the live Grammy awards telecast and hosted the show for seven consecutive years, beginning in 1971.

Movie songs became a specialty, including his signature "Moon River." The longing Johnny Mercer-Henry Mancini ballad was his most famous song, even though he never released it as a single because his record company feared such lines as "my huckleberry friend" were too confusing and old-fashioned for teens.

The song was first performed by Audrey Hepburn in the cherished 1961 film "Breakfast at Tiffany's," but Mancini thought "Moon River" ideal for Williams, who recorded it in "pretty much one take" and also sang it at the 1962 Academy Awards. Although "Moon River" was covered by countless artists and became a hit single for Jerry Butler, Williams made the song his personal brand. In fact, he insisted on it.

"When I hear anybody else sing it, it's all I can to do stop myself from shouting at the television screen, 'No! That's my song!'" Williams wrote in his 2009 memoir titled, fittingly, "Moon River and Me."

At a Wednesday matinee at Williams' Moon River Theatre in Branson, a performer told the crowd that Williams would have wanted the show to go on, and it did. The first show after his death included a moving video of him performing "Can't Take My Eyes Off of You."

"It was very emotional, very sad," said Barbara Cox of Atlanta, who came to Branson on vacation. "We've lost a great man."

Carol and Ruth Harding, sisters who traveled from suburban Denver to attend a second show Wednesday evening, said they've been Williams fans since they were teenagers. The women, both in their early 70s and married to brothers, said they'd seen him perform numerous times, including 10 trips to his Christmas show.

"It's not going to be the same without him," Ruth Harding said. "It's like losing a family member. He's been part of our family."

Because of illness, Williams had not performed in several months

He had been a constant presence on television with "The Andy Williams Show," which lasted in various formats through the 1960s and into 1971. It won three Emmys and featured Williams alternately performing his stable of hits and bantering with guest stars.

It was on that show that Williams — who launched his own career as part of an all-brother quartet — introduced the world to another clean-cut act — the original four singing Osmond Brothers of Utah. Four decades later, the Osmonds and Williams would find themselves in close proximity again, sharing Williams' theater in Branson.

Williams did book some rock and soul acts, including the Beach Boys, the Temptations and Smokey Robinson. On one show, in 1970, Williams sang "Heaven Help Us All" with Ray Charles, Mama Cass and a then-little known Elton John, a vision to Williams in his rhinestone glasses and black cape. But Williams liked him and his breakthrough hit "Your Song" enough to record it himself.

For many families, Williams and his music were a holiday tradition. His annual Christmas specials continued long after his show ended, featuring Williams dressed in colorful sweaters singing favorites that almost always included "The Most Wonderful Time of the Year," a song written for Williams that became a holiday standard.

Williams' act was, apparently, not an act. The singer's unflappable manner on television and in concert was mirrored offstage.

"I guess I've never really been aggressive, although almost everybody else in show business fights and gouges and knees to get where they want to be," he once said. "My trouble is, I'm not constructed temperamentally along those lines."

His wholesome image endured one jarring interlude.

In 1976, his ex-wife, former Las Vegas showgirl Claudine Longet, shot and killed her lover, skiing champion Spider Sabich. The Rolling Stones mocked the tragedy in "Claudine," a song so pitiless that it wasn't released until decades later. Longet, who said the slaying was an accident, spent only a week in jail. Williams stood by her. He escorted her to the courthouse, testified on her behalf and provided support for her and their children, Noelle, Christian and Robert.

Also in the 1970s, Williams was seen frequently in the company of Ethel Kennedy, Robert Kennedy's widow. The singer denied any romantic involvement.

He was born Howard Andrew Williams in Wall Lake, Iowa, on Dec. 3, 1927, and began performing with older brothers Dick, Bob and Don in the local Presbyterian church choir. Their father, postal worker and insurance man Jay Emerson Williams, was the choirmaster and the force behind his children's career.

When Andy was 8, Williams' father arranged for the kids to have an audition on Des Moines radio station WHO's Iowa Barn Dance. They were initially turned down but kept returning until they were finally accepted. The show attracted attention from Chicago, Cincinnati and Hollywood. Another star at WHO was a young sportscaster named Ronald Reagan, who would later praise Williams as a "national treasure."

The brothers later worked with Kay Thompson, a singer who eventually became famous for the "Eloise" children's books. She had taken a position as vocal coach at MGM studios, working with Judy Garland, June Allyson and others. After three months of training, Thompson and the Williams Brothers broke in their show at the El Rancho Room in Las Vegas, drawing rave reviews and as much as $25,000 a week.

After five years, the three older brothers, who were starting their own families, had tired of the constant travel and left to pursue other careers.

Williams initially struggled as a solo act and was so broke at one point that he resorted to eating food intended for his two dogs.

A two-year TV stint on Steve Allen's "Tonight Show" and a contract with Cadence Records turned things around. Williams later formed his own label, Barnaby Records, which released music by the Everly Brothers, Ray Stevens and Jimmy Buffett.

Williams was a lifelong Republican who once accused President Barack Obama of "following Marxist theory." But he acknowledged experimenting with LSD, opposed the Nixon administration's efforts in the 1970s to deport John Lennon and in 1968 was an energetic supporter of Robert Kennedy's presidential campaign.

When Kennedy was assassinated in Los Angeles in June 1968, just after winning the California Democratic primary, Williams sang "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" at his funeral.

"We chose that song because he used it on the campaign trail," Williams later said of Kennedy, who had been a close friend. "He had a terrible voice, but he loved to sing that song. The only way I got through singing in church that day was by saying, 'This is my job. I can't let emotion get in the way of the song.' I really concentrated on not thinking about him."

After giving up touring, he settled in Branson, with its dozens of theaters featuring live music, comedy and magic acts, and was among the first wave of national entertainers to perform there regularly.

When he arrived in 1992, the town was dominated by country music, but Williams changed that with his classy, $13 million theater in the heart of the entertainment district, where he did two shows a night, six days a week, nine months of the year. Only in recent years did he cut back to one show a night. His most popular time was Christmas.

Not everyone in Hollywood accepted his move to the Midwest. "The fact is most of my friends in LA still think I'm nuts for coming here," he told The Associated Press in 1998.

He and his second wife, the former Debbie Haas, divided their time between homes in Branson and Palm Springs, California, where he spent his leisure hours on the golf course when Branson's theaters were dark during the winter months following Christmas.

Retirement was not on his schedule. As he told the AP in 2001: "I'll keep going until I get to the point where I can't get out on stage."

Williams is survived by his wife and his three children.

Quotes reflecting on the memory of crooner Andy Williams, who died Wednesday in Branson, Mo., after a yearlong battle with cancer. He was 84.

"Andy Wiliams' smooth voice and casual style turned the songs he sang into timeless classics and made him one of America's top pop singers. ... The entertainment industry has lost a giant piece of its living history today, but Williams' legacy will forever be enshrined in the annals of music and television." — Neil Portnow, president and CEO of the Recording Academy.

"We've lost a very special man today. He personified to me, for the country, a style of grace, dignity and class with everything he did. ... He had an ability to make everything seem balanced and perfect and, you know, we've lost a great American treasure." — singer Tony Orlando.

"He was a wonderful person. He befriended me when I was just a teenager starting out in show business, and we remained friends throughout the years. I regret that we didn't have the chance to spend more time together. He was one of the great voices and great people of our time." — Smokey Robinson.

"He gave me singing advice that I've applied to my entire career. He told me, 'Don't take singing lessons. Do breathing exercises." He would tell me to practice swimming the length of a pool underwater to increase my lung capacity. Because of Andy, I'm able to do power songs like "World Goes Round" in our Las Vegas show." — Marie Osmond.

"Andy was a dear friend of mine, and we've known each other since we were kids in Cincinnati. He and his brothers sang and of course, so did I, and often I would go over to their house and we would sing together. They asked me to join their group, but my vocal coach thought I should be out on my own and so that's what I did. Andy and I kept in touch over the years and just recently, even when he was so sick, he wrote to congratulate me on my new CD. He was such a sweet, thoughtful man, and I will miss him dearly." — Doris Day.

"They didn't understand why Andy, who could live anywhere he wanted to live, would choose a rural community in southwest Missouri. But he enjoyed bringing people in and saying, 'Look, here is what I've created.'" — Raeanne Presley, mayor of Branson, Mo., on Williams' friends who were puzzled by his decision to settle in the city in the early 1990s and build a theater there.

Condolence & Memory Journal

We never missed The Andy Williams Show, then his Christmas shows; all wonderful and so full of clean, good, old fashioned fun. With the first words in a song we knew who was singing; that Voice! The way he stood by Claudine just made us love and respect him more. We admire him for his values as well as his talent; the world needs more like him.

I think Andy Williams was a superb singer with a velvet voice. Haven't heard ANY voice on "The Voice" or "American Idol" to match it!! Andy's right up there with Nat King Cole, Perry Como and Johnny Mathis, in my opinion. So many singers on American Idol and the like try to be powerhouses and personality and stylemongers. Just give me that VOICE!

Every day is a good day for me because your magnificent voice fills my world. My happiest moments are spent singing along with you...Manet, Monet & Degas! As I look back, I realize that I was born attuned to your frequency. I was a third grader in 1963 when I first heard your voice and watched you sing your heart out on your television show. Children can fall in love. I did. I wrote to you constantly during that decade. When I received the photo shown, I was up in my pink cloud for years! I cherish that photograph. Thank you so much for making the little girl that I once was, feel so very special. When I saw you live, in concert outdoors, I thought my entire body was going to explode from sheer joy! Thank you for your music and your show and your smile and your sparkling eyes. I would have given away everything just to meet you. You have given me and so many people on this planet a happy heart. I hope your heart was happy too.

My thoughts and prayers are with the loved ones of Andy Williams, especially his wife, children, and grandchildren. A beautiful voice has been silenced, and yet whenever I hear his music my heart is warmed by the sweet memories they conjure. My darling mother had all his albums, and played them constantly. She sang along with them and soon we all did, whether it was just around the house or taking a cross-country car trip for vacation. They provided the soundtrack to some of the happinest moments of my life, and for that I will be forever grateful. I remember as a little girl watching his television show as well, and what a kind and dear man he seemed to be. His closing song, "May Each Day", was so special to my mother she requested it be the last song played at her funeral. God has called Andy Williams home, but may we always remember him with a smile and may his music continue to touch the lives of people everywhere.

When I was little, in the 60s, I loved the sound of Andy Williams' voice. In the early 70s, in high school, my friends were buying me his albums instead of all the crazy noise that was hard rock. Yesterday, my mom and I were out and about listening to music in the car on TAPE and there was his unmistakably beautiful voice wrapping its warmth around me. I will always treasure the sound of his voice when I hear him singing. His music is awesome; his contributions..a legacy.

Moon River was my mother's favorite song. I bought that album for her as a young girl. My mother has since past on, leaving that song as a loving reminder of a precious gift of my mother.
Mr. Williams set the tone for the the gentle men that I learned to love. His beautiful voice was an expression of the loving being within. The world increased in value by his self expression. I was a lucky girl to have such a role model. Those "crushes" linger a life time. "Two drifter off to see the world"...ride the river to the moon:}

Unlike may artists who tend to fall in and out of one's favor as our taste in music changes between childhood and adulthood, Andy was always my favorite vocalist. Ever since my father played his albums when I was in grade school through today, I have never heard a vocalist who could sing with his clarity from the lowest tones to the glass-shattering high notes. When I finally got to see him perform in Branson, he was in his late 70's. I was amazed how he could still belt out those high octives with perfection.

He will be truly missed.

Thank you, Andy, for making so many Christmas holidays truly the most wonderful time of the year. When your songs come on the radio this year, we will think of you and perhaps shed a tear. You sang the soundtack of our lives, and we will always be grateful.

I looked forward to Andy's television show years ago, so I was thrilled beyond words when Andy came to Branson and within hours of drive time from my home. I made a point of seeing his shows at The Moon River every year...sometimes twice a year. Every show was as special as Andy. My friend, Colleen (also an Andy fan) and I sat in the second row for years; and after Andy would sing and come to the front of the stage and bow, the theater would be quiet for a brief moment...all until we screamed "We love you, Andy!" in our loudest voices. This was an October tradition for us; then a return visit for the wonderful Christmas show. I also brought my grandchildren to see the Christmas shows. When Deanne was little, she proudly wore a shirt that said, "My grandma is an Andy fan. Now I am one too." His voice was/is smooth and unique I will enjoy his many CDs, DVDs, and VHS tapes as long as I live. May God rest his sweet soul in a beautiful, warm, and heavenly place. I love you, Andy. Just wish you could've won your battle with cancer. i know you tried.

Andy was my favorite singer. I had the privelage of meeting him in person in Branson. We have always played his Christmas music in our home during the holidays. He was kind enough to talk to my
mother who was 94 after his show in Branson one night and she was thrilled beyond words.

Always had a crush on Andy handsome and gentle. Last night while I listened to his music, I became overwhelmed with sadness. Funny how you can feel close to someone you never met. His beautiful voice and warmth will continue on, awesome to have been on earth with a legend. Thank you, Andy Williams, for being a class act.

Andy, Wall Lake, IA has lost a true son & friend. My Dad remembers you & your brothers when you lived there. The town is so proud of you & your home is now a local treasure. I was in Branson last Nov.'11 & signed your huge get well poster in your theater. Wished we could have seen you in person. I loved watching your TV shows & especially your Christmas shows because you brought all of your family & relatives to participate. We will miss you but we all have your music to remember you by. Say hello to my dad if you see him. I miss him so much.

I collected Andy Williams albums while my friends collected the Beatles and Rolling Stones. I feel about this loss the way others reacted to the loss of Elvis and John Lennon. I got to see him live only once, but it has lasted me a lifetime, and I will never, ever stop listening to his golden voice! Thank You, Andy, and RIP.

Andy Williams made my memories come alive each Christmas. My grandfather would listen to Andy every Christmas, and I grew up listening and carrying on the very same tradition. As I was scanning the obits in my home town paper; I seen that he had passed away. Long time ago I was fortunate to see Andy Williams sing at the Fox Theatre in St. Louis, MO. I enjoyed his voice immensely. His voice gave everyone a special gift when he sang. God Bless you Andy!

Remember Andy Williams growing up as a young child. It is truly sad to see those that have touched your heart from watching shows that made you laugh and smile. You know someday we all will have to die but it doesn't make it any easier when you see ones you cherish or have enjoyed watching pass away. May family and friends gain some comfort from the one that brings comfort to us all because soon one day we will no longer have to deal with death. Rev. 21:4.

Moon River, for 45 years, is the song my best friend and I have played incessantly in honoring our bond as "huckleberry friends". My heart hurts knowing you are no longer with us. You are dearly missed, but now you can sing with your "huckleberry friends" and wow the angels like you did for us!!! Our love and prayers are with your family...

I am way beyond sad. As Ronald Reagan said, Andy WAS a national treasure. Just imagine how that voice sounds echoing through Heaven. I will never forget when he said in Merrillville, IN, "This is not a holiday show. It's a CHRISTMAS show." The place erupted in cheers. He was one of a kind. Things will never be the same.

I was able to meet you briefly at an Alzheimer's event in Branson and cherish the photo I had taken with you that i had taken, mainly at the prodding of my husband.

In the 60's a young couple danced to Mr. Williams "Moon River", at a hight school teen club. His name was David Huckelberry, and we had wonderful dreams for our future. The spring of 1968 I lost my Huckelberry friend a week before our wedding, when the USS Scorpion 589 , Nucelear Sub. Was lost with 99 souls on board.
Since The Moon River Theatre was opened I have traveled to Branson twice a year to hear Mr. Williams sing our song. With tears in my eyes and a longing heart I can almost see a young couple dancing on stage as Mr. Williams sings. My heart is sad for Mrs. Williams for I know her heart is so sad. She has lost her LOVE. God Bless

I too am sad to hear of Mr. Williams death. I watched his variety show on t.v. and was one of the fortunate ones to see him three times in Branson for his Christmas shows. So sad to know that I'll never see another Andy Williams Christmas show or hear " It's the Most Wonderful Time of The Year " in person.

I am maybe a year and a half older than Andy, but when we were in Western Hills High School in Cincinnati, we used to double date. We were such kids. He was on the radio with his brother every morning as my Dad deliver me to school, singing for a gospel program sponsored by Shineola Shoe polish. They sand the commercial. I have always been proud to say tht I knew Andy Williams long before he became famous. I still loves his music. Ellen Morris

My wife and I saw Andy in concert with Henry Mancini...what a terrific combination...both so professional...such impecable taste...Andy connected with a huge audience in an arena in Greensboro, North Carolina....folks, like us, had driven over a hundred miles to fill the place...and you could hear a pin drop when he spoke to the audience...possibly the best show (and we've seen nearly 100) we have ever seen!

Loved listening to him & watching him on all his TV shows, especially his Christmas specials & was SAD to see him leave regular programming. Was DELIGHTED when I finally saw him in person in RI; what a wonderful show!! Was so hoping all our prayers would help him beat that cancer, but it wasn't meant to be. Guess God wanted another GREAT voice in Heaven. Glad I have my CD's, tapes, his autobiography to enjoy still. Am listening to him sing "Maria" at the moment & rest of his 16 Most requested Songs cd. He will be missed; guess I won't be trying to plan a trip to Branson as I'd hoped to see him perform again! God bless and help his wife, Debbie, children & entire family now and forever. When he loved, he loved well and deeply. Hold onto those memories. A forever fan, Elaine

The late Andy Williams had a great entertainment career, primarily as an Adult Standards/Easy Listening vocalist in the 1950s and 1960s with such tunes at the "Hawaiian Wedding Song", "Music To Watch Girls By" and "Can't Get Used To Losin' You" along with his versions of "You Buttefly", "Canadian Sunset", the title theme music from the 1970 film adaptation of the novel "Love Story" (subtitled "Where Do I Begin?") and "Speak Softly Love" from the 1972-released film adaptation of the 1969-released Mario Puzo (d. 2000) novel, "Godfather". I heard the sad news this morning on National Public Radio and I felt a tremendous loss.

Andy Williams was my first love. I remember watching both of his prime-time programs on NBC (don't mean the Christmas ones).

Aside from a couple of soundtrack albums, Andy's were the first albums I was given for Christmas. My favorite one will always be _Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head_. I've heard it so many times I can play it in my head.

Now he and Kay Thompson are reunited in Heaven and having a great time putting on shows.

Two years ago my husband took me to see him & I was so glad I did, it was his last show. My dream has always been to share the stage w/ Andy & sing. I sing a lot & he was my first "vocal coach". what a wonderful man and entertainer....I first saw Andy in 1961 at The Palmer House in Chicago, IL...We have seen him at least 5 times in Branson including two performances of his Christmas Show..Ironically we had tickets to see him this coming Monday with the Osmonds at his Moon River Theatre....he will be missed so very much.

I am so happy that I was able to see his show in Branson MO. It was wonderful and luckily I had great seats, really close. I was able to take a lot of fabulous pictures as well. I was there in 1996. I will always remember Moon River and where I was when I heard it for the first time. Also, I really enjoyed his Christmas specials on TV as well as his regular TV shows. It was such a family inspired show. I wish we had that kind of TV today. He will truly be missed but his music will live on forever.
